The Square & Compass, Great Shelford, Cambridge

With a name like that, all common and everything, you’d expect to walk into this pub and find a sleepy-headed Landlord at the bar, with a couple of young waitresses darting about with drinks in that bird-like way they so often have in villages. And you’d be right, of course, the Square & Compass is indeed like that. But that’s not all it is, not by a long shot. No…Walk into the bar and you will find all the hallmarks of a quality freehouse: real Oak bar, polished to a tee, barely comprehensible locals – a sure sign that the home-brewed beer is a sight to behold let alone taste – and fine seating, all with a friendly atmosphere that will have you practically weeping and screaming “why aren’t all pubs like this place!”

There really isn’t anything to complain about. It even has a car-park with an old shed thing in the corner; there’s a gap built-in behind it, which allows gents who prefer outdoor urinating to go about their business there (this has been a big success).

But in all seriousness, it’s a lovely little village pub. One that’s seen it through the hard times and is sure to keep on going well into the next few years. (Did I mention there is even a shop fitting display in the window? What I mean is, they have a load of old artefacts on display there, things that had been found underneath the pub. If that doesn’t make you intrigued then I honestly don’t know what will.)
